“How to speed up, clean up, & simply run your PC better” … a series, by daniel snyder.
As I’ve been trying to figure out what to blog about, it hit me… at least write about something you know! So, here goes my series on computer tips & advice. Follow these tips and I guarantee your PC experience will be a whole lot better. I’ll try to keep things simple & to the point. Of course, my opinions are biased by my experience (such as what software/programs I prefer etc…), but my experience is such that I still choose a PC over a MAC, so hopefully that speaks.
Okay here goes…
tip #1, filehippo.
Filehippo is my absolute favorite source for (free!) software, particularly those programs which tend to be a necessity to life on a PC. You will find programs such as, browsers, plugins, anti-malware (anti-virus), video and audio tools, security tools etc. The greatest thing about filehippo is that it is a trustworthy, secure site. You can be certain you will never download a program infected with spyware, and you will always get the latest version. When you select a program for download you are able to see the entire history of that product, including what version is currently available and what versions have been previously released (in fact if you wanted to, you could download and run an old verison of a program). Filehippo, has another great feature – and this is the most important part of the filehippo tip: update checker. I recommend to all, that you install this update checker on your PC and use it periodically (maybe once every 2-3 weeks, give or take.) What is it? ” The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases. These are then neatly displayed in your browser for you to download. Please note that not all programs are supported.”
I can’ t stress enough how important it is to run the latest versions of programs on your computer. Right now over 40% of the world is still stuck on Internet Explorer 6, and Microsoft and other browser developers are in meetings discussing how to get people to change. Why wouldn’t you want to run the fastest, most secure, most effective version of a program? Use update checker to make sure you are. One note! When you install, I recommend you uncheck the box ‘run at startup’. If you run update checker at startup it throws an extra process into the background on your PC – another program using valuable system resources. Instead, start it when needed, and then close it from the toolbar when you’re done.
Well that’s tip #1. Feedback would be great, stay tuned because tip #2 is right around the corner…
