Out with the old and in with the new. Technology has advanced more than some of us could have ever imagined. Gone are the days of those chunky box TVs and dial-up internet that we remember from our childhoods. I couldn’t even tell you the last time I used a DVD player!

While technology has evolved into items that are sleeker, they’ve also become smarter. Instead of having a binder filled with DVDs, smart TVs filled with apps and streaming services are allowing families to be able to watch movies and TV shows with just the click of a button. Thermostats, lights, and music can now be controlled with our own voices.

A survey released this summer is telling us that smart devices are filling homes nationwide. 91% of households are using a virtual assistant. Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are the most popular among the respondents, with 39% and 35.58% of people using them, respectively.

When it comes to the most popular smart home devices, the smart TV is king, with 309 people having one in their homes. Following is the smart speaker, smart lights, and smart security camera. The smart security camera is an item especially popular on social media during the holiday season as many have caught porch pirates in the act, as well as captured precious moments from delivery drivers.

The survey also revealed that while technology and artificial intelligence has advanced, survey respondents aren’t all too happy about it. 50% even stated that they believe a robot takeover is likely or certain to happen in the next 50 years!

While many of us are excited about these advancements, it does make you think about how much more is yet to come. And soon it may seem that our current smart gadgets will be as outdated as those giant box TVs.
